ABOUT US

Blessed Earth’s mission is to provide you, our customer, with healthy and environmentally friendly products made from certified organic cotton and wool.

All of the cotton and wool used in our products has been grown without chemicals and no chemicals have been added to our products in the finishing process.

We ensure that any dyes used conform to certified organic guidelines and are considered ‘low impact’, which means they are of minimal harm to our environment and do not contain heavy metals.

All of our products are manufactured using fair-trade principles and are also made in Australia whenever possible.

Our Story…

Blessed Earth has been through many phases of development since it’s inception in early 2004. A passion for purity of lifestyle has driven us to create products which are in harmony with our bodies and our environment - a back-to-basics approach.

Natural fibres feel wonderful next to our skin. They allow our bodies to breathe and are in harmony with our own energy fields.  Natural fibres insulate us, naturally, keeping us cool when it’s warm and warm when it’s cool.

We started with underwear, the most basic of garments, aiming for comfort and purity. There was no certified organic cotton being grown in Australia at the time, so we needed to source from overseas. We realise that there is a compromise in sourcing our fabric from overseas when we are aiming for the most environmentally-friendly product possible, but we felt strongly about supporting a product which was grown chemical-free and certified organic.

Our searching was rewarded when we ‘stumbled’ across SEKEM in Egypt. Here was an outstanding example of a company which is leading the world in the field of growing cotton not only organically, but bio-dynamically. They are also a beacon of light when it comes to operating their business along fair-trade guidelines. Please see here for more information about SEKEM (Link coming soon).

Fortunately, we were able to import beautiful quality Egyptian cotton fabric for our underwear range from Nature Tex, a division of SEKEM. We were also fortunate to find an Australian manufacturer who guided us in the process of creating patterns and manufacturing our own range here in Australia.

Not only that but in the process we discovered that Nature Tex also manufactures a great range of baby and children’s wear which we now stock as well.

The following year, 2005, we contacted Blue Canoe in the U.S.A. about complimenting our range of underwear with their fantastic range of comfortable and healthy bras. Our customer feed-back from the bras was very enthusiastic, so we became their Australian distributor. We also now stock a basic range of their wonderful clothing garments, which are all designed and manufactured in the U.S.A. from certified organic Peruvian cotton.

Around the same time, 2005, we started to branch into organic bedding. The more we delved, the more we realised how toxic the bedding industry is! We were shocked to discover the range of chemicals which goes into the manufacture of mattresses especially – the place where we are spending approximately 1/3 of our lives.

The bedroom is supposed to be a place of healthful rejuvenation. However, what we are offered in the mainstream marketplace is mostly synthetic, giving us hot and fitful sleeps. Either that, or it is made from so-called natural materials which are then processed with harmful chemicals designed to keep our bedding wrinkle-proof or fire-resistant or turn natural rubber into latex (a man-made substance!)

At first, we started selling organic cotton mattresses, quilts and pillows and these were a great success.

When the opportunity to sell organic wool mattresses quilts and pillows arose, we welcomed it. Wool has a number of distinct advantages over cotton, especially when it comes to comfort.

As the certified organic fibre industry in Australia is still very young, it was initially difficult to find a supplier of certified organic wool. This is, wool that comes from sheep which are raised on certified organic farms. The sheep are looked after according to organic guidelines and treated humanely, with respect. They are not dipped or treated with chemicals.

In order to manufacture futons and bedding from wool, it needs to be a specially selected type of wool which has the right ‘loftiness’ and micron count in order to create good quality bedding. It is then scoured (cleaned) using a special organic process. The wool used in our bedding is pure and no additional fillers are used as with most other “100% wool” products on the market.

Once again we were fortunate to discover a sheep stud growing the highest quality Bio-Dynamic wool, certified by ‘Demeter’. Even our scouring, carding and manufacturing facilities have now been inspected by Demeter and we have been issued with a certificate to say that the entire process complies with strict organic guidelines. This ensures that the product you are purchasing was created under pristine conditions using the best quality certified organic ingredients and practices.

So, this brings us up to 2008. After a lengthy process of product development we finally have the world’s first Demeter certified, biodynamic wool bedding range, all made here in Australia by an expert bedding manufacturer. Not only is it safe and healthy, it is supremely comfortable. Needless to say, we are very pleased with this latest accomplishment.

Most importantly, it means that you, the consumer, now have access to a wider range of pure and healthy products which contribute to the betterment of our society and our world. Our purchasing decisions shape the kind of world we live in, not only for us now, but for generations to come.

We are very grateful to you, our wonderful customers, who are co-creating this new reality of living in harmony with each other and with respect for the beautiful planet which sustains us all, our Earth…

For that, we feel truly blessed.
